Waterproof flooring buying guide

Up until recently, the only choices for waterproof flooring were tile and luxury vinyl (LVF). While both are terrific, options were limited. However, with an explosion of new waterproof products, including engineered vinyl and a new waterproof laminate flooring version, that's all changed.

What is waterproof flooring?

Most waterproof flooring is a newer, more advanced version of luxury vinyl flooring. It is thicker and durable and uses the WPC (wood plastic composite) and SPC (stone plastic composite) cores. Technologically advanced, WPC and SPC offer the highest level of moisture protection, never rippling or peeling, no matter how much water there is or for how long. In addition, both cores, especially SPC, give a firm, rigid feeling underfoot like a hard surface.

Is this flooring stylish?

Yes, because these floors have all the designs of LVF, with true-to-life, vibrant images of wood, stone, and tile created with high-definition photography. Micro beveling and embossing add depth and dimension. It follows all the trends, including textured looks like wire-brushed, hand-scraped, and more.

What is waterproof vinyl plank flooring?

This refers to the vinyl being cut into strips and mounted on boards to mimic hardwood. It's one form of LVF, which is already durable (five times thicker than original sheet vinyl) and waterproof. When waterproof flooring is cut into planks and constructed with the SPC core, it becomes a waterproof vinyl plank with even more durability and the highest level of water protection.

Where can you install waterproof flooring?

It's ideal for the kitchen, bath, or any higher-than-normal moisture areas or leak-prone space. With gorgeous wood looks, it's now possible to have it in the bathroom, where genuine hardwood was always avoided due to the wood/water challenges. However, the high-end style makes it appropriate for use in any room, especially in areas prone to spilling.

Like all LVF, these floors are low maintenance, requiring only regular sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Installation is also easy since it can be a floating floor where the pieces click together, then hover over the subfloor without nails or glue. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level.
